A Beginners Guide to Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

First things first – the title of your page is the most important page element. The title appears in the browser title bar, and in the HTML it is wrapped between
. The text held within the title tags is what is presented to the user when your website appears in the search engine results pages (SERPS). The reason for the importance of this element is simple; it tells the user instantly what the page is about. Remember, however, to include your business function in this tag. For example, if are a company called Father Time and sell watch batteries, your tag should look like "Watch Batteries by Father Time", or "Buy Watch Batteries at Father Time".
Secondly, we need to include heading tags. These are written in HTML like so -
,
,
and so on. Rank each page text element on their importance by this tag. For example, let’s continue with the Father Time theme; you might have a page with three blocks of text on it. These can be broken up to heading, sub-heading and body. Remember to write each piece with keyword rich text.
How do you define "keyword rich text"? Imagine this – you have a great page all about watch batteries and you want the user to come to your page and buy from you. But how do the search engines know how your page matches against what the user is searching for? Keywords are the answer. An important part of SEO, and any search engine marketing campaign, is to ensure that you have good keyword density on your pages. For example, if you sold watches, watch batteries and watch accessories, you would need to include your keywords in any text that you write – watch battery, watch batteries, watch strap and so on. You can use bold and italic tags to emphasise these keywords and they are in turn given extra weight.
The number of keywords you write in any block of text is important. You should keep a density of 4-7% for each keyword. This means that for every 100 words you write, you include one of your keywords. Anything above 7% may be classed as spam and anything below 3% may be ineffective.
Keyword density can be improved with META data and ALT tags on images.
META data appears in the header of the HTML document, in the mark up and out of view of the user. These descriptive tags are not particularly effective today, but it’s worth putting your keywords in there anyway. ALT tags are used to describe images, but again may be used to enhance the richness of your pages for search engine indexing.
There are so many factors to take into consideration when performing SEO on your website. This article has provided an insight for people dipping their toes in the pool of search engine marketing and website optimisation for the first time. Some may be compelled to seek an SEO specialist who can perform good on-site SEO and link building campaigns for you.
